Baltimore Magazine hosted a roundtable discussion on health care with Sen. Benjamin Cardin and the state's top health care and policy leaders, including Maryland Public Policy Institute President Christopher B. Summers. The interview is published in the November issue.
In the article Summers outlines how government drives high health care costs and why extending its reach will make insurance more expensive for consumers. "In Maryland alone ... we pay 12 percent more for our health care because of the 65 or 66 mandates that are on insurance. ... We need to go beyond making sure that everyone has insurance cards and dealing with uninsured," he said. One example of how to make insurance more affordable and accessible would be to drop the number of required treatments paid for by insurers, he said.
