Remembering Governor Marvin Mandel

Aug 31, 2015

ROCKVILLE, MD  (August 31, 2015) — The Maryland Public Policy Institute today issued the following statement on the passing of Maryland’s 56th Governor and the Institute’s former board member, Marvin Mandel.

“Marvin Mandel’s positive impact on Maryland can still be felt today – nearly forty years after he left the Governor’s Office,” said Christopher B. Summers.  “He modernized Maryland’s executive branch by creating the cabinet structure, enacted a Constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget, and transformed Maryland’s transportation infrastructure, from airports to the transit system.  We at the Institute are honored that he agreed to serve on our board.  On a personal level, I will remember Governor Mandel for being generous with his time and counsel, his fondness for telling great stories, and for his deep affection for the state he called home his entire life.”

Governor Mandel served on the Institute’s board from 2007 to 2012. In 2010, the Institute published Governor Mandel’s memoirs,I’ll Never Forget It: Memoirs of a Political Accident from East Baltimore.”
