Friedman Legacy for Freedom: New Educational Opportunities for Maryland

Across the globe, Nobel Laureate economist Dr. Milton Friedman was hailed as one of the 20th century’s great champions of freedom. President George W. Bush called him a “revolutionary thinker” and one of America’s “greatest citizens.” Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher heralded him as an “intellectual freedom fighter.” Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Friedman was well known as the father of the modern school choice movement, owing to his 1955 proposal for vouchers that parents could use to purchase education at the schools of their choice.

The Maryland Public Policy Institute will be honoring Dr. Friedman and his contributions to education reform as part of the national Friedman Legacy for Freedom campaign on July 31, 2007, which would have been Friedman’s 95th birthday. I hope you will join us.

Friedman Legacy for Freedom: New Educational Opportunities in Maryland Tuesday, July 31, 2007
The Maryland Inn
58 State Circle
Annapolis, Maryland
 12:00 – 1:30 pm
(Refreshments will be served)

At this event, we will discuss Maryland’s prospects for educational freedom, including our proposal to offer scholarships for foster care children. We will be joined by Delegate Nancy Stocksdale (R-Carroll County) who filed legislation in the Maryland General Assembly earlier this year to provide K–12 tuition scholarships to children in foster care.

There is no charge for this event. I hope you will be able to attend to help honor Dr. Milton Friedman, one of the world’s finest Intellectual Freedom Fighters, and to recognize the leaders who have the courage to follow in his footsteps today.
