Are Voters Getting the Full Story About Both Candidates?

Dan Bongino and Congressman John Delaney are the Republican and Democrat nominees for Maryland's 6th district Congressional election. Both candidates get national media attention; only one gets local attention.

Case in point is the Herald-Mail in Hagerstown, which covers the geographic center of the district. Judging from their coverage, there is no contest in the election, just a coronation of the incumbent.

Delaney, the incumbent, is a strong candidate and a leading voice for offering solutions to fund national infrastructure projects. Likewise, Bongino is a strong challenger who brings vast national security experience to the election.

Washington County, the Herald-Mail’s primary coverage area, is comprised of more registered Republicans than Democrats. So, one would think that newspapers like the Herald-Mail, which are facing staggering circulation declines in their print franchise would be finely tuned to their subscriber base.

Editor and Publisher, the trade publication for the newspaper industry, say they must “be relevant” in their coverage as newsrooms scramble to launch apps, cable TV channels and develop a social media following. Those in charge of the Herald-Mail should put politics aside and focus on their business. Bongino has attracted a social media following of over 80,000 and there is something to be learned from that.
