Institute Reacts to Governor Hogan’s State of the State Address

Jan 30, 2019

ROCKVILLE, MD (January 30, 2019) — The Maryland Public Policy Institute issued the following statement in response to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s State of the State address Wednesday, including his plans for new tax relief and redistricting reform.

“We welcome any effort to meaningfully reduce taxes on Maryland residents and small businesses,” said Christopher B. Summers, president and chief executive officer of the Institute. “Governor Hogan’s plan for $500 million in targeted tax cuts will provide much-deserved financial relief for small businesses, workers saving for retirement, college students, and public safety personnel. We also hope this initiative is a stepping stone to broader, across-the-board tax reductions that give every Marylander greater freedom from the state’s tax collectors.

“Governor Hogan is correct that the General Assembly must confront Maryland’s brazenly partisan redistricting process. For decades, politicians in power have drawn legislative and congressional districts that strengthen their own power while weakening equal representation for everyday citizens. Governor Hogan’s address is an important reminder that the legislator must act this session on comprehensive redistricting reform.”
