ROCKVILLE, MD – By blaming Washington for our state’s credit downgrade, state leaders are simply trying to distract us from their own failures. Maryland was warned last year about the impact of its reckless spending, unfunded programs and stagnating economy. These problems aren’t new, they’re systemic, and this downgrade makes clear it’s time they get addressed.

While the legislature did what it had to do to patch up a massive budget deficit this year, it still hasn’t addressed any of the underlying issues cited by Moody’s in its initial warning. Until our leaders get serious about reigning in spending and growing our economy, the news is only going to get worse and their excuses are going to get even less believable.
