Baltimore takes premature victory lap on violent crime | GUEST COMMENTARY

In his recent State of the City address, Mayor Brandon Scott claimed a major achievement: “Every year,” he said, “U.S. News puts out a list of the 25 most dangerous cities in America. This year, Memphis was number one. Followed by St. Louis, Detroit, Birmingham, Little Rock, New Orleans, Cleveland, Kansas City, Myrtle Beach, Denver. And I could keep going. Baltimore isn’t on the list.”
 

Wow! Amid the applause, quite a few listeners must have wondered if it was true that Charm City, long dramatized in gritty crime shows like “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “The Wire,” is now less dangerous than a beach resort or a Rocky Mountain boom town? Or (had the mayor kept going) safer than thriving cities like Nashville, Seattle or Salt Lake City? If true, Hizzoner is a miracle worker.
 

Unfortunately, it’s not; he’s not.
